TikTok and Snapchat Dodge Trial on Harm-to-Kids Lawsuit, Agree to Confidential Settlements
In a significant development, TikTok and Snapchat have settled a lawsuit that claimed their platforms were addictive and harmful to children. The lawsuit, filed by a 19-year-old plaintiff known as KGM, alleged that the social media companies’ platforms led to her addiction, depression, and suicidal thoughts.
The trial, which was set to begin in Los Angeles, will now proceed without TikTok and Snapchat. The lawsuit claimed that the social media companies had deliberately created products that were harmful to children, and that they had failed to protect them from the negative effects of their platforms.
According to Bloomberg Law, TikTok and Snap Inc., the owner of Snapchat, reached a confidential settlement with the plaintiff on January 20. The terms of the settlement were not disclosed.
This lawsuit is just one of many that have been filed against social media companies, including Instagram and YouTube, alleging that their platforms are harmful to children. The cases claim that the companies have prioritized growth and profits over the well-being of their young users.
The trial, which will continue with the other social media companies later this year, could have significant implications for the industry. If the social media companies are found guilty, it could lead to high-value settlements and sweeping regulation of how the sites handle youth accounts.
Sacha Haworth, executive director of the Tech Oversight Project, said that the settlement between TikTok and the plaintiff was not surprising, given the number of similar lawsuits that have been filed. “This was only the first case — there are hundreds of parents and school districts in the social media addiction trials that [have started], and sadly, new families every day who are speaking out and bringing Big Tech to court for its deliberately harmful products,” she said.
The outcome of these lawsuits could have a significant impact on the social media industry and how it regulates its platforms to protect children. As the cases continue to unfold, it will be important to monitor the developments and their implications for the industry and its users.
