Less Than a Quarter of Eligible Seniors Have Ayushman Coverage
Two years after the Centre expanded the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) to cover all citizens aged 70 years and above, a staggering 1.29 crore of the 6 crore eligible seniors have been enrolled in the scheme. The National Health Authority (NHA) has now asked states and Union Territories to step up efforts and prioritize enrolling all eligible beneficiaries.
The Ayushman Bharat scheme, aimed at providing health insurance coverage to vulnerable populations, expanded to include all citizens aged 70 years and above in 2021. However, despite the best efforts of the government, the scheme has failed to reach a significant portion of the eligible population.
Bureaucratic Bottlenecks Holding Up Enrolment
The NHA has asked states and Union Territories to expedite Ayushman Card generation, ensuring complete coverage of eligible beneficiaries. However, bureaucratic bottlenecks seem to be holding up enrolment. The slow pace of Ayushman Card generation and verification has been a major challenge in the expansion of the scheme.
State governments have been slow in implementing the revised guidelines, leading to a significant delay in the enrolment process. Additionally, the lack of a unified digital platform has resulted in duplication of efforts and inefficiencies in the system.
