NASA Unveils Long-Secret Comet Dust, Decades After Historic Space Mission
For decades, scientists have been studying the first solid pieces of a comet ever returned to Earth, caught by NASA’s Stardust spacecraft in 2004. Now, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration has finally released the collected samples to the public, offering a unique glimpse into the composition of comet 81P/Wild 2.
The Stardust spacecraft flew through the cloud surrounding the comet at a blistering 6.1 kilometers per second on January 2, 2004. A specially designed collector, filled with silica aerogel, faced the incoming dust, slowing microscopic particles that would have otherwise struck with the force of a speeding bullet.
Unveiling the Comet’s Secrets
The aerogel collectors, which returned to Earth on January 15, 2006, contained millions of tiny fragments of comet dust. These particles, no larger than a few micrometers in diameter, were collected and stored at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. Now, scientists have been given access to these samples, allowing them to begin a detailed analysis of the comet’s composition.
Comets are believed to be ancient, remnants of the early solar system, and studying their composition can provide valuable insights into the formation and evolution of our cosmic neighborhood. By examining the comet dust, scientists hope to learn more about the conditions that existed during the solar system’s early days, including the presence of water and organic molecules.
