“When you’re in that top 5 of the world, people start to believe in you, and you start to believe in yourself,” Bonnar said in an interview with Bloody Elbow. “It’s not about doubting yourself; it’s about doubting other people. But when you lose to someone like Sean, it’s like, ‘Hey, maybe I’m not invincible after all.’ His aura took a hit, and it’s gonna be tough to come back from that.”
High Expectations
Bonnar acknowledges that Chimaev was the overwhelming favorite heading into the fight, which adds to the shock of his loss. As a result, the Swedish-Soviet fighter will face an uphill battle to regain his momentum.
“He was the favorite going into this fight, and he got submitted,” Bonnar said. “If Sean Strickland can do that to him, you start to wonder what other guys in the division can do that to him.”
“The expectations for him were so high, and it’s gonna be tough to overcome those now,” Bonnar added. “It’s gonna be tough to get back to where he was, especially with all the criticism he’s been getting for how he handled the belt after the fight.”
