College Student Charged with Murder of Newborn Had Casey Anthony Images on Phone
A 20-year-old college student, Anne Demegillo, has been charged with the murder of her newborn baby girl, who she allegedly allowed to drown in a toilet at her Palm Coast home. According to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, Demegillo had images of Casey Anthony, a woman who was acquitted of murdering her own child in 2008, on her phone.
Demegillo gave birth to the baby girl on March 5 and allegedly watched as the infant cried and drowned in the toilet. She then went to class, worked on a campus play, and returned home to bury the baby in a shallow grave in her backyard. The sheriff’s office said that Demegillo had looked up “newborn premature babies” and “foods to decrease fertility” on her phone, in addition to having images of Casey Anthony.
Casey Anthony’s baby, Caylee, went missing in 2008, and Anthony reported the case to authorities 31 days later. The discovery of Caylee’s body nearby led to charges of murder, aggravated child abuse, and aggravated manslaughter, but Anthony was ultimately acquitted of the major charges and served about three years in prison for misdemeanor lying to police.
Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly described Demegillo’s case as “shocking” and said that it was “hard to comprehend how a mother would choose to watch their infant drown instead of lifting the baby out of the toilet.” Demegillo was initially arrested on March 6 and charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child, but she was released on bail after her parents put up their residence as collateral. She was re-arrested and charged with first-degree premeditated murder, aggravated child abuse, and failure to report a death with intent to conceal evidence after a grand jury indictment on Monday.
Demegillo’s arraignment is scheduled for April 21. The case has sparked widespread outrage and shock, with many struggling to understand how a mother could abandon her newborn baby to die. The incident has also raised questions about the support and resources available to new mothers, particularly those who may be struggling with the challenges of parenthood.
The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the case, and Demegillo remains in custody without bail. Her defense lawyers have not commented on the case, and it is unclear what arguments they will make in her defense.
