Yankees Option Anthony Volpe to Triple-A as Jose Caballero Excels at Shortstop
The New York Yankees have made a significant decision regarding their shortstop position, opting to send Anthony Volpe to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. This move comes as Jose Caballero continues to impress at the position, making it difficult for the Yankees to justify bringing Volpe back to the team.
Volpe, the Yankees’ first-round pick in the 2019 MLB Amateur Draft, has been rehabbing from left shoulder surgery. During his 13 rehab games in the minor leagues, he went 11-for-44 (.250). However, Caballero has been playing exceptional baseball, slashing .259/.306/.405 with a .711 OPS, four homers, and 12 RBIs in 34 games this season.
“Caballero is playing the heck out of the position and playing really well,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “That complicates it.”
Caballero’s strong performance has made it challenging for the Yankees to consider replacing him with Volpe, who has struggled with consistency at shortstop. In 153 games last season, Volpe tallied 19 errors, which was third-most among big league players at the position.
What’s Next for Anthony Volpe?
While Volpe’s demotion to Triple-A may come as a surprise to some, it’s not a permanent move. The Yankees are likely to bring him back to the majors when the time is right. In the meantime, Volpe will continue to work on his game, getting regular at-bats and reps at shortstop to prepare for his eventual return.
The Yankees’ decision to option Volpe to Triple-A is a testament to the team’s depth and flexibility. With Caballero playing well, the Yankees can afford to be patient with Volpe, allowing him to refine his skills and come back stronger when the time is right.
