New EU Laws Will Soon Force AI Creators to Label Deepfakes
Starting August 2nd, the European Union’s (EU) AI Act will introduce strict regulations on AI-generated content, forcing creators to label their deepfakes and embed AI watermarks into their digital products.
At the heart of the new law is the need for transparency in AI-generated content. This includes deepfakes – AI-altered videos or images that aim to deceive – as well as chatbots and other digital interfaces.
The Transparency Rules
Under the new law, anyone living in the EU will be required to label their deepfakes with clear indicators, making it easier for viewers to distinguish between human-generated content and AI-created material. This will be a significant shift, as deepfakes can be used for malicious purposes, including spreading misinformation or manipulating public opinion.
AI Watermarking
Another key aspect of the law is the introduction of AI watermarking. This will involve embedding a digital signature into AI-generated content, making it easier to identify the AI system used to create it.
The aim is to prevent the misuse of AI-generated content, such as AI-created artwork being passed off as human-made.
A New Era for AI Transparency
The introduction of these rules marks a significant turning point in the EU’s efforts to regulate AI. As AI continues to play an increasingly important role in our lives, the need for transparency and accountability has become more pressing than ever.
What this means is that AI creators will need to be more explicit about the origins of their work, and consumers will have a better understanding of what they’re looking at. This is a step in the right direction, but the journey to fully understanding and regulating AI is far from over.
The EU’s AI Act is a significant development, and its impact will be felt globally, as other countries and industries look to the bloc’s lead on AI regulation.
