A shark that’s never had a male mate can still produce a pup with only her DNA.

At the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, Nebraska, a revolutionary reproductive phenomenon has been observed in a group of captive female bonnethead sharks. For approximately three years, three females shared a tank without the presence of any male bonnethead sharks, a setup scientists initially believed would be impossible for these sharks to reproduce.

The remarkable discovery was confirmed when one of the females gave birth to a pup that carried only the mother’s DNA, through a process called parthenogenesis. This natural reproductive mechanism allows some animals, including sharks, to produce offspring without fertilization by a male, effectively bypassing traditional sex.

Genetic testing of the pup revealed that it had no paternal DNA, a finding that completely overturned what scientists thought possible about the reproductive biology of these sharks.
