A team of researchers has used artificial intelligence to identify a peptide that might mimic the weight-loss effects of Ozempic, a prescription medication for obesity, but without some of its more concerning side effects. This potential “natural Ozempic” was discovered by analyzing the genomes of mice and zebrafish.
From AI to Lab Rats
The researchers used a technique called machine learning to scan the DNA of these animals for genetic variations that might be linked to appetite regulation. This approach allowed them to pinpoint a specific peptide, which they called “NPC1,” that seems to have a similar effect on appetite as Ozempic.
In experiments, NPC1 reduced hunger in mice and zebrafish by increasing the levels of a hormone called GLP-1, which is also elevated by Ozempic. The study’s authors suggest that NPC1 could be a more targeted alternative to Ozempic, which can cause side effects like nausea and diarrhea.
