Greece is investing €350 million in a new national space strategy that will see the country move from relying on space technologies to becoming a leader in designing, developing, and manufacturing satellite systems.
The strategy, backed by Finnish expertise, marks a significant shift in Greece’s approach to space technology, which has historically been focused on using existing systems rather than creating its own.
A Finnish Connection
The Finnish connection comes via the new HELLAS-SPACE 2.0 national space strategy, which will see collaboration between Finnish and Greek companies, as well as European Space Agency (ESA) participation.
Sami Vaahahti, the CEO of Finland’s satellite manufacturer, ICEYE, said that this partnership will enable Greece to “develop a robust and sustainable space industry” that will provide a strong foundation for its future growth.
The Greek government hopes that the new strategy will create thousands of new jobs and stimulate economic growth in the country, as well as increase its global influence in the space sector.
From User to Creator
Greece’s new space strategy reflects a broader trend in the industry, where countries are moving from being purely users of space technologies to becoming creators and innovators in their own right.
As the market for commercial space launches continues to grow, countries like Greece are recognizing the potential for their own homegrown industries to compete with leading players in the market.
A New Era for Space in Greece
So what does this mean for ordinary Greeks? With the country investing heavily in its space industry, there’s potential for new job opportunities, spin-off technologies, and a boost to the country’s innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem.
As Greece takes its first steps towards becoming a major player in the global space industry, we can expect to see significant developments in the years to come, including the launch of its own satellite systems and the creation of new space-related businesses.
With a strong foundation in place, Greece is poised to join the ranks of countries like the US, China, and India as a major player in the global space industry.
