Ahead of a new wave of AI-powered automation, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is countering concerns that the technology will lead to widespread job losses and economic devastation. In a stark rebuke to critics, Bezos asserts that AI will instead usher in “multiple golden ages” and create new employment opportunities.
Bezos’ comments reflect a divide within the tech community over the potential consequences of AI. Some experts warn that the increased use of automation could displace millions of jobs, particularly in sectors where tasks are repetitive or can be easily outsourced to machines.
AI’s Job-Creation Potential
Bezos, however, remains optimistic about the sector’s potential to drive economic growth and job creation. He points to the emergence of new industries and roles that have arisen alongside the development of AI, such as AI researcher, data scientist, and AI ethicist.
“I think these people are just wrong,” Bezos said in a statement. “We’re already seeing the creation of new industries, new jobs, and new opportunities that we never would have had without AI.” While acknowledging that some jobs may be displaced, he believes that AI will ultimately lead to the creation of new positions that we cannot yet imagine.
Bezos’ Vision for AI
Bezos is also backing up his rhetoric with action, with his new firm Prometheus – a venture capital firm that invests in companies developing AI and other emerging technologies – recently raising $12 billion in new funding.
Prometheus’ mission is to identify and support companies that are working on AI solutions that can have a positive impact on society, such as improving healthcare outcomes, enhancing education, and reducing waste.
