Half of Shipping Firms Are Testing AI, But Few Have Gotten It Right
A significant shift is underway in the shipping industry, with nearly six out of ten companies now experimenting with or implementing Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems. But don’t be fooled – progress has been slow, and many are still struggling to fully integrate AI into their operations.
According to recent data, a whopping 58% of shipping firms and maritime organizations have either launched pilot programs or are actively exploring the use of AI. This is a far cry from the early days of experimentation, when many were skeptical about the potential benefits of AI in shipping.
The AI Haves and Have-Nots
However, while some companies are successfully integrating AI into their operations, others are lagging behind. A mere 7% of shipping firms have reportedly made significant strides in AI adoption, with some even using the technology to achieve tangible business benefits.
The reasons for this disparity are varied, but it’s largely due to the complexity of implementing AI systems in a highly decentralized industry like shipping. From navigating varying weather conditions to managing global supply chains, shipping companies face unique challenges that require a high degree of autonomy and adaptability.
