Nigerian schoolgirls from Ado Girls Secondary School have become the first girls’ school in the country to win a prestigious AI award, outshining competitors from around the world.
These students from Onitsha, Anambra State, took home the Outstanding Organisation Award at the global AI Youth Competition organised by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE). Their project, which aimed to develop an AI-powered tool to monitor and prevent flooding in their community, left judges impressed.
The school’s students were among over 1,000 participants from 60 countries who submitted innovative AI projects to the competition. Their team, consisting of 15 girls, spent several months working on the project under the guidance of their school’s computer science teacher, Mrs. Ogechi Ajaegbu.
