Africa CDC officials are on high alert as Ebola spreads in DRC.
The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has called for urgent regional coordination in response to a confirmed Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in Ituri Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The alarming development comes just weeks after a traveler from the affected area was confirmed to have brought Ebola to Uganda.
According to Dr. Jane Kabore, a senior official at Africa CDC, the situation requires immediate action to prevent further spread.
“We are working closely with the DRC Ministry of Health and other partners to enhance surveillance, contact tracing, and case management,” Dr. Kabore said in a statement.
Uganda Confirms Imported Case of Ebola Bundibugyo
The imported case reported by Uganda’s Ministry of Health involved a traveler who recently returned from Ituri Province. The patient, identified as 30-year-old resident of Kampala, is receiving treatment at a local hospital.
Africa CDC officials say the Ugandan case highlights the need for enhanced border control measures and strengthened surveillance systems across the region.
“We urge all countries in the region to remain vigilant and to enhance their preparedness and response capacities,” Dr. Kabore emphasized.
Africa CDC Takes Swift Action
In response to the outbreak, Africa CDC has deployed a team of experts to Ituri Province to support the response efforts. The team will provide technical assistance in areas such as contact tracing, case management, and laboratory diagnosis.
Additionally, Africa CDC has activated its Incident Management System (IMS) to facilitate coordination and collaboration among partners and stakeholders in the affected areas.
The confirmation of the Ebola outbreak in Ituri Province comes just months after a similar outbreak in the neighboring East African country of Uganda.
