Softball: Hampshire’s Mackenzie Provost Earns First Varsity Win in 14-2 Victory Over Greenfield
The Hampshire softball team had a dominating performance on Tuesday night, defeating Greenfield 14-2 in five innings. The Raiders recorded 12 hits, with Raegan Dubay leading the charge, going 4-for-4 with six RBIs and three extra-base hits.
Dubay’s impressive night at the plate was complemented by her strong defensive play behind the dish, where she consistently blocked pitches and prevented stolen bases. “She’s playing really well,” said Hampshire head coach Brian McGan. “I’m proud of her, because she works hard at practice. And when you work hard at practices, things like that are coming for you.”
Mackenzie Provost, the Raiders’ starting pitcher, earned her first varsity win, throwing 4 1/3 innings and allowing just one earned run while striking out two. “It feels amazing, and it’s not only just a win for me, in the books, but it’s also a win for the whole team,” Provost said.
Greenfield had an early lead, scoring runs in the first two innings, but the Raiders’ lineup proved to be too much for them to handle. The Green Wave had just five baserunners throughout the night, and their timely hitting made for a competitive start, but they struggled to keep up down the stretch.
“We’re a young team; [there are] a lot of girls who are still growing into varsity-level roles,” said Greenfield head coach Erich Leaper. “We have our good days and our bad days… The girls are frustrated, but I’d rather them be frustrated than feel nothing about it.”
The Raiders’ bats were aggressive throughout the contest, with seven different players reaching base safely. Kalin Dubay had a big night, picking up two hits and driving in three runs. “The aggressiveness [was great],” McGan said. “In the last game we played, we got beat 2-1 on a walk-off, but we were a little laid back too much. We didn’t come out and get the ball as much as we did [on Tuesday]. [Tuesday] they were much more aggressive.”
With the win, Hampshire improves to 9-3 on the season, while Greenfield falls to 5-9. The Raiders will look to stay hot on Wednesday when they face East Longmeadow, while the Green Wave will try to get back on track with two upcoming home games, starting with a match against Franklin Tech on Thursday.
