Madi Liimatainen Shines in First Start for Saint Michael’s Softball
In a remarkable display of skill and determination, Madi Liimatainen, a freshman at Saint Michael’s College, made the most of her first start in the circle, leading the Purple Knights to a 6-2 victory over American International College on April 3. The Turners Falls native pitched a complete game, giving up only two hits with five strikeouts and two walks.
A Breakthrough Performance
“I was really happy with myself,” Liimatainen said, reflecting on her outstanding performance. “I felt like myself. I was like ‘this is me.’ I went up to my coach and told him ‘this is how I play.’ This is actually me pitching.” Liimatainen’s confidence and talent were on full display, and she is eager to build on this success.
A New Opportunity
With an injury to the pitching staff, Liimatainen is poised to take on more starts, and she is ready for the challenge. “I want the ball,” she said. “I love being in control of the game. I like being there in the circle. In the start, I was more efficient. It was better than my relief appearances.” Coach Nick Goodreau is also optimistic about Liimatainen’s prospects, saying, “She is progressing well… Let’s get her the time in the circle that she needs to get used to this level.”
A Versatile Player
Liimatainen has played multiple positions for the Purple Knights, including first base and shortstop, in addition to her pitching duties. In 54 at-bats, she has 11 hits, including five doubles and two home runs, with 12 RBI. Goodreau values her versatility, saying, “I love the idea of having utility players.” As the season progresses, Liimatainen will continue to develop her skills and find her niche on the team.
A Promising Future
Despite the team’s current record (5-19, 3-11 Northeast-10), Liimatainen’s talent and work ethic make her a promising prospect for the future. With more starts on the horizon, she is excited to continue growing and contributing to the team’s success. As Goodreau noted, “I definitely see her starting some more games. Hopefully, continuing to show the progression we’ve seen the first half of the season.”
Madi Liimatainen is majoring in health science at Saint Michael’s College and is looking forward to a bright future in softball and beyond.
