APC Rules Out Automatic Tickets for Defecting Governors

In a definitive stance, the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has declared that it will not grant automatic tickets to governors who have recently defected to the party. This includes prominent figures such as Umo Eno from Akwa Ibom, Agbu Kefas from Taraba, and Siminalayi Fubara from Rivers State, with Abba Kabir Yusuf from Kano State also expected to join soon.

An anonymous member of the APC National Working Committee (NWC) revealed that defection does not guarantee an automatic ticket. APC’s Director of Publicity, Bala Ibrahim, reinforced this notion, highlighting that every member should exercise their democratic rights and participate in the electoral process.

The response from the opposition has been critical. Ini Ememobong, the National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), expressed disappointment over the governors’ decisions, labeling them as misguided. Similarly, Oladipo Johnson from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) echoed these concerns, predicting regret for the defectors.

Among those defecting are current and former political figures, raising questions about the motivations behind such moves. Many believe that securing re-election is a primary driver for these politicians.

However, APC insiders argue that President Bola Tinubu’s administration has made significant strides, encouraging members to join based on recent achievements rather than mere political expediency. An NWC member stated, “The success of our Renewed Hope Agenda is a primary reason for this influx.”

Critically, the APC has emphasized that no automatic nominations will be granted, including for President Tinubu, should he decide to run again. The party insists on a transparent democratic process where all members can contend for candidacy based on merit and support from fellow members.

Bala Ibrahim further reinforced this idea, stating, “The issue of automatic tickets is not being considered for any of our governors or elected officials.” The APC aims to maintain a level playing field for all candidates, as this aligns with the party’s democratic ethos.

As the APC navigates these changes, the opposition remains keenly aware of the dynamics at play, predicting challenges ahead for the defectors. Ememobong concluded that the realities of party politics could lead to disenchantment for those seeking preferential treatment within the APC.
