Immersive Ocean Photography Exhibit Opens at Alameda Point
An extraordinary collection of award-winning ocean photos, chosen by Oceanographic magazine in their “Ocean Photographer of the Year” competition, is set to transform Hangar 41 at Alameda Point into an immersive celebration of the beauty, power, and fragility of our planet’s oceans. The exhibit, hosted by the West End Arts District, promises to be a spectacular showcase of undersea shots, as well as an opportunity to learn about the dedicated photographers behind the lens.
Aiming to Inspire Oceanic Environmentalism
The exhibit’s lofty goal is to interest viewers in oceanic environmentalism, a tall order, according to Tara Pilbrow, the Alameda-based West End Arts District’s executive director. “Most people have little or no connection to the sea,” she says, citing the lack of familiarity with the ocean, even in a community surrounded by the San Francisco Bay. The exhibit aims to “activate the imagination of what is below the opaque surface” of the bay, encouraging viewers to see the world in a new light.
Stunning Photos from Around the World
The Hangar 41 show features 116 photos chosen from 15,000 submissions, taken by photographers from all over the world. The images are grouped into categories such as Wildlife, Fine Art, Adventure, Conservation, Human Connection, Young Photographer of the Year, and the Female Fifty Fathoms Award. From scientists growing heat-resistant coral in laboratories to trawling ships and fishing villages, the photos tell a broad and compelling story of the ocean and its inhabitants.
The exhibit is not just about showcasing stunning images but also about opening people’s curiosity to understand what’s beneath the surface. By doing so, it hopes to inspire a sense of responsibility and care for the ocean’s future. As Daryl Karp, the Australian National Maritime Museum’s director, notes, “the stories behind these photographs are as compelling as the visuals themselves – they challenge us to see the ocean not just as a place of wonder but as a world in need of our care.”
Upcoming Events and Exhibits
In addition to the photos, the exhibit will feature adjacent exhibits, including storytelling from the San Francisco Estuary Institute, sea-inspired performances by cellist Mia Pixley, a sunset photo cruise, and a presentation by Josie Iselin on her new book, “The Mysterious World of the Bull Kelp Forest.” For more information and tickets to the exhibit and events starting Friday, visit westendartsdistrict.org/ocean-photographer-of-the-year-alameda online.
