Google Assistant ruined my smart home setup — but Gemini just saved it

Google’s 10-year-old smart home devices are still kicking thanks to Gemini.

For years, I’ve been frustrated with the inconsistency of Google’s Home ecosystem. A decade ago, I started building a smart home setup using Google’s devices, and I’ve added to it over time. But the truth is, those old devices had become a liability – until Gemini came along.

Google Assistant, which powers my smart devices, was flaky at best. It would often fail to recognize my voice, or worse, send random commands to my lights and thermostat. Siri, on the other hand, was no better. With the advent of Matter, a new standard for smart home devices, I thought things would finally get better. But Google’s implementation was slow to arrive, and Siri remained a non-starter.

A Decade of Smart Home Struggles

My smart home setup has been a work in progress for over a decade, with devices ranging from the original Google Home to newer, more advanced models like the Nest Hub Max. But despite the promise of Google Assistant, I’ve faced countless issues with its reliability. From dropped connections to incorrect voice recognition, it’s been a battle to keep my smart home running smoothly.

It got to the point where I considered abandoning the Google Home ecosystem altogether. But then Gemini arrived on the scene.

How Gemini Saved My Smart Home

Gemini is an AI assistant developed by Google that’s designed to work seamlessly with smart home devices. And work it does – incredibly well. With Gemini, my 10-year-old Google Home devices suddenly became relevant again. The assistant recognizes my voice accurately, and it’s able to control my smart devices with ease. It’s a night-and-day difference from Google Assistant, and it’s been a lifesaver for my smart home setup.

What this means is that even older smart home devices can be revitalized with the right AI assistant. It’s a game-changer for those of us who’ve invested heavily in our smart home ecosystems, but may not have the budget to upgrade to the latest and greatest devices.

Google’s Gemini is more than just a stopgap solution, though. It’s a testament to the potential of AI to breathe new life into outdated technology. As smart home devices continue to proliferate, it’s clear that AI will play an increasingly important role in making them work seamlessly together. And for me, that means my 10-year-old Google Home devices are here to stay – thanks to Gemini.
