I Tried 5 Different AI CAD Tools – Here’s The Results

After a month of tinkering, I’ve tried five different AI-powered Computer-Aided Design (CAD) tools, and the results are mixed. AI has made waves in various industries, but its adoption in CAD feels like a work in progress.

Designing with AI: The Promise and Reality

I started with Autodesk’s Project Fusion, a tool that claims to revolutionize the design process with generative AI. While it did produce some impressive results, the tool struggled with fine-tuning and customization – essential for a profession that demands precision. It’s clear that AI can generate ideas, but human input is still necessary to refine them.

Next up was Graphine’s AI-Powered CAD, which uses machine learning to assist with drafting and design. The tool’s suggestions were often helpful, but the algorithm’s limitations became apparent when dealing with complex geometries. It’s a promising start, but it won’t replace a human designer anytime soon.

The State of AI in CAD

An Onshape developer gave me access to their AI-assisted design feature. While this tool excelled at predicting design outcomes, it lacked the ability to make changes on the fly – a significant oversight for a field where iterative design is common.

AI CAD Studio from Autodesk fared better, offering a more seamless user experience. However, its reliance on pre-existing designs meant it was less effective when working with original ideas. This highlights the challenge of creating AI tools that can work in tandem with human creativity.

What This Means

While AI has improved CAD design efficiency, it’s far from a replacement for human expertise. These early adopters have shown promise, but the technology still requires refinement. What this means for designers is that AI will augment their workflow, not replace it. Expect AI to become a valuable tool for sketching, prototyping, and refining designs, but human intuition and experience will remain crucial for creating truly innovative projects.
