Google is planning to unleash a swarm of millions of genetically modified mosquitoes in California and Florida to combat diseases transmitted by their wild counterparts.
Targeted Release
The tech giant, in partnership with biotech firm Oxitec, aims to release up to 32 million Aedes aegypti mosquitoes over the next two years in California and Florida.
The specially treated mosquitoes will have a modified gene that’s designed to prevent them from producing viable offspring, eventually reducing the local mosquito population.
