On a cloudy day in Boca Chica, Texas, the next-generation Starship V3 rocket soared into the sky, its Raptor engines roaring to life as it cleared the launchpad. Although the test flight didn’t go entirely according to plan, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk hailed the mission a success, calling it a “goal for humanity.”
What Happened During the Test Flight?
The Starship V3 rocket was expected to fire all six of its Raptor engines simultaneously, but during the test flight, only five engines reached full power. The rocket still managed to reach an altitude of 16 km (10 miles) before landing safely back on Earth, albeit off-target.
Musk attributed the partial engine failure to a technical issue that prevented the sixth engine from firing at full power. The SpaceX CEO downplayed the setback, stating that the mission’s primary objectives – testing the rocket’s propulsion and landing systems – were still met.
