Team-Based World War 1 FPS Gallipoli Looks Promising

BlackMill Games, a developer known for its series of World War I FPS games, is set to release its next installment, Gallipoli. This new game takes the action to the Gallipoli Peninsula, where the Ottoman Empire fought against the Allied Powers during WWI. At PAX East 2026, I had the opportunity to play a few matches of the game and was impressed by its focus on realism and historic accuracy.

Realistic Character Customization

Upon entering a match, players are assigned to one of the two factions, determining their uniform, customization options, and available accessories. The game’s attention to detail is notable, with options for mustaches, faces, uniform variations, and accessories that reflect the time period. However, unlike many other FPS games, character customization in Gallipoli remains grounded in reality, avoiding over-the-top or wacky options.

Gameplay and Suppression System

The game mode I played was a large-scale 25v25 command mode, where teams attempt to capture objectives and advance to the enemy’s HQ. While accuracy and aim are still important, the game’s suppression system allows players to contribute without needing to be a skilled shooter. Firing near an enemy player will cause them to become suppressed, making it harder for them to reload, aim, and fire. This system makes the game more accessible to new and casual players, while also promoting teamwork and strategy.

Classes and Abilities

Gallipoli features a variety of classes, each with unique abilities and weapon sets. I enjoyed playing as an ammo-bearing class that allowed me to spawn on squadmates and provide ammo, as well as playing as the Sniper and Commander, which can call for attacks on specific areas. These classes add depth and complexity to the game, making it more engaging and challenging.

Aiming for a Casual Audience

In a genre as competitive as FPS, it’s refreshing to see a game like Gallipoli that’s targeting a more casual audience. With its focus on realism, historic accuracy, and accessibility, Gallipoli is poised to attract players who are interested in playing in a historic warzone without needing to be a skilled shooter. If you’re looking for a more laid-back FPS experience, keep an eye on Gallipoli, set to release later this year.

This preview is based on a demo played at PAX East 2026. The final product is subject to change.
