Man Allegedly Carried Out Sex Act on Bus in Front of Schoolchildren
Police are on the lookout for a 61-year-old man accused of engaging in a sexual act in front of children as they traveled to school on a public bus. The incident has left parents deeply concerned about their children’s safety during commutes.
The mother of one pupil involved has expressed distress over the situation, stating she has considered moving house to prevent her daughter from taking the bus again. The children, whose identities are protected for legal reasons, were en route to secondary school when the alleged act occurred.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the man initiated conversation with the children before engaging in inappropriate behavior. One parent recounted her daughter’s experience, noting, “He had been drinking and was high and started making conversation, asking if they had been drinking, which made my daughter uncomfortable.” The man purportedly offered sweets and suggested that school was less fun than drinking at a local racecourse.
Despite some children relocating to the upper deck of the bus, the young girl stayed on the lower deck out of a sense of discomfort. Other students intervened, attempting to shield her from the man, who then reportedly performed a sex act with his hands down his trousers, though he was not fully exposed.
After the incident, the man exited the bus at Chepstow bus station and appeared to relieve himself in public.
Gwent Police have confirmed they are seeking the man, who had previously been arrested in November on suspicion of similar offences. Reports suggest he breached bail conditions, prompting a renewed search.
The child’s mother praised the commendable response from school authorities but emphasized the need for safer transport options. Monmouthshire County Council has acknowledged the incident and is consulting with transport operators to ensure the safety of students on public buses.
While Monmouthshire County Council provides transport for certain pupils, this specific route was not designated for school transport as the children were not attending their nearest secondary school. However, the mother has called for solutions, including a dedicated child-only bus service or the availability of paid seats on school transport for non-eligible students.
Despite the harrowing experience, the young girl has resumed taking the bus, with her mother supporting her decision to maintain a sense of normalcy.
Gwent Police stated, “We take all reports of this nature seriously and are continuing our enquiries. The safety of children is paramount to us.”
As investigations continue, parents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior.
