Exclusive Update: Family of North Bay Teen Injured in Fatal Crash Speaks Out
A Rohnert Park teenager, Angi Sharma, is fighting for her life in the hospital after a devastating car crash in Novato last month that claimed the life of her friend, Nico Vargas Ortiz. The 17-year-old’s family has spoken exclusively with ABC7 Eyewitness News, providing an update on her long and challenging recovery.
The crash, which occurred on April 11, involved five teenagers riding in a car driven by a 17-year-old who is now facing DUI charges. Angi’s father, Saleen Sharma, revealed that his daughter is currently receiving care at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Vallejo, where she is being treated for a punctured lung, fractured ribs, and a leg broken in three places.
A Long and Painful Recovery
“She’s in pain,” Sharma said, struggling to hold back tears. “She doesn’t remember what happened.” The family is now facing a daunting medical bill, which is approaching $300,000. To help with the cost of Angi’s recovery, they have started a GoFundMe page, which has been met with an outpouring of support from the community.
“We’re very glad they are there supporting us with the money,” Sharma expressed. “I’m really thankful from my heart. We have never experienced this. We’re going through it day by day.” The family is grateful for the support, but they are also seeking justice for the tragic events that unfolded. Sharma stated, “If he was drinking, he shouldn’t be driving. It’s not right.”
A Community Comes Together
The Novato community has rallied around the family, offering support and condolences. The friends were students at Rancho Cotate High School in Rohnert Park, and many of their classmates have been affected by the tragedy. As Angi continues her long and difficult road to recovery, her family remains grateful for the love and support they have received.
For those who wish to support Angi’s family during this challenging time, donations can be made to their GoFundMe page. The family is thankful for any contribution, big or small, as they navigate this difficult journey.
