SG Government Makes AI Education Mandatory for All Students from 2027
From 2027, a total overhaul of the education system in Singapore is underway, with a focus on equipping students with fundamental AI skills, regardless of their course of study. Education Minister Desmond Lee announced that compulsory modules incorporating baseline AI competencies will be introduced for all university, polytechnic, and Institute of Technical Education (ITE) students.
AI Literacy for All
For incoming students from 2027, AI skills will be an integral part of their curriculum, tailored to their field of study. Students pursuing arts or humanities, for instance, will learn AI applications in creative fields, while those in STEM will focus on more technical aspects. Existing students won’t be left behind, with their existing curriculum “enhanced” to include AI components.
According to Minister Lee, this move aims to ensure that students develop essential skills to stay competitive in an increasingly AI-driven job market. The decision reflects the SG government’s efforts to boost the nation’s AI capabilities and position Singapore as a leader in the field. This move comes on the heels of previous initiatives, such as the Artificial Intelligence Programme Office (AIPO) established in 2019 to drive AI adoption across various sectors.
What this means
Singapore’s AI education push means that students, particularly those in technical fields, will gain a solid foundation in AI principles, enabling them to apply AI concepts to real-world problems. This shift not only prepares them for an AI-centric job market but also fosters a new generation of innovators, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders in AI research and development. As AI continues to play an increasingly pivotal role in various industries, Singapore’s AI-literate workforce is poised to drive the nation’s economic growth and innovation.
