Gemini Intelligence has high Android spec requirements, likely won’t support Pixel 9 or Galaxy Z Fold 7 – 9to5Google

The Pixel 9 series and Galaxy Z Fold 7 will likely be left out in the cold when Google’s Gemini Intelligence takes center stage, as the tech giant’s new AI push has some pretty steep requirements for Android devices to support it.

Google announced Gemini Intelligence this week, touting it as a major upgrade to Android’s AI capabilities. But the fine print suggests that only a select group of high-end devices will be able to take advantage of the new features.

Steep System Requirements

The system requirements for Gemini Intelligence are daunting, to say the least. According to 9to5Google, which first spotted the news, devices will need to have at least 8GB of RAM, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, and a 1440p or higher display.

These requirements are unlikely to be met by Google’s own Pixel 9 series, which was announced just last month. The Pixel 9 Pro, in particular, has a 6.7-inch 1080p display and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, which falls short of the required specs.

The Galaxy Z Fold 7, Samsung’s latest flagship foldable device, also appears to be out of luck. While it has a high-end processor and plenty of RAM, its 2176×1840 Dynamic AMOLED display falls short of the required 1440p or higher resolution.

What’s Required for Gemini Intelligence

So, what exactly does Google require for Gemini Intelligence to work its magic? According to the documentation, devices need to meet the following criteria:

  • A minimum of 8GB of RAM
  • A Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor or later
  • A 1440p or higher display resolution
  • Android 13 or later
  • Google Play services version 22.13.13 or later

It’s worth noting that these requirements are subject to change as Gemini Intelligence is still in development, but it’s likely that only a small subset of high-end devices will meet the necessary specs.

What’s Next for Gemini Intelligence?

While it’s disappointing that some high-profile devices won’t be supported by Gemini Intelligence, Google’s AI push is still an exciting development for Android fans. We’ll be keeping a close eye on the situation and will provide updates as more information becomes available.

For now, it looks like only the most premium devices will get to experience the full benefits of Gemini Intelligence. The question is, will it be worth it?
