The UIA World Congress of Architects just dropped a provocative theme: Becoming. Architecture for a Planet in Transition.
What happens when AI-generated architecture meets the real world?
From June 29 to July 2, with the exhibition extended until July 19, Barcelona will host the UIA World Congress of Architects for the second time in its history. While AI has already started making a mark in architecture, the UIA’s focus on “Becoming” – architecture for a planet in transition – raises questions about the role of AI-generated designs in reimagining our built environments.
UIA 2026’s Keynote Speaker: Winy Maas
Winy Maas, co-founder of the Dutch architecture firm MVRDV, will be delivering the UIA 2026 keynote address. MVRDV has been pushing the boundaries of architectural design and urban planning with their innovative and often provocative projects. Their designs often incorporate AI-generated elements, which they see as a tool to enhance, rather than replace, human creativity.
Maas and his team believe that AI can help accelerate the design process, allowing them to explore more possibilities and create more complex, interactive spaces. However, they’re also aware of the potential risks – for instance, the homogenization of styles and the loss of cultural identity.
What this means
The UIA World Congress of Architects is a reminder that AI is increasingly becoming an integral part of the architecture industry. As architects and designers learn to harness the potential of AI, we can expect to see more futuristic and responsive buildings that adapt to our changing needs. But the question remains: how do we balance the benefits of AI-generated architecture with the need for human touch and cultural diversity?
The UIA 2026 congress will bring together leading architects, designers, and industry experts to discuss these very issues. It’s an opportunity to explore the cutting-edge applications of AI in architecture and urban planning, and to consider the implications for our built environments and our collective future.
