A France-Born Innovation: Floating Wind Farm Tackles Energy and Marine Life

A 10 MW turbine was switched on last month, marking the full power-generating capacity of France’s Éoliennes Flottantes du Golfe du Lion (EFGL) floating offshore wind farm. Ocean Winds, the project’s energy company, announced the milestone in July 2026.

The wind farm, spread across the Golfe du Lion (Lion Gulf), comprises of three 10 MW turbines. While other wind farms rely on traditional turbine installations, EFGL has opted for floating structures that can withstand the harsh marine environment. This innovative design enables the turbines to be placed further out to sea, reducing the visual impact on coastal communities and opening up potential sites for energy production.

This isn’t just about generating power; Ocean Winds is also using the wind farm as a hub for its pioneering Biohuts initiative. The data collected will help scientists better understand the complex relationships within the ocean ecosystem and inform conservation efforts.
