NBC and INEC Unite Against Misleading Election Coverage
The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) are joining forces to police the airwaves ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
The move comes as a direct response to increasing instances of unethical broadcasting practices, including spreading misinformation and hate speech, during previous election seasons. By combining their resources, the two agencies aim to identify and tackle such issues before they gain traction.
Joint broadcast monitoring will see NBC and INEC work together to scrutinize and verify the accuracy of electoral content on television and radio stations. This initiative targets both local and national broadcasters, and will be implemented through a dedicated task force.
The collaboration is a significant step in ensuring free and fair elections, where voters are not swayed by false information. “Election coverage holds enormous influence over the public’s perception of the electoral process,” said a senior NBC official. “It’s vital we safeguard the integrity of the airwaves to preserve the credibility of the elections.”
Key to the initiative is the development of a sophisticated monitoring system, capable of detecting and reporting suspicious content in real-time. INEC will provide critical expertise on electoral matters, while NBC will leverage its knowledge of broadcasting regulations to enforce compliance.
The joint monitoring effort will be active from January 2027, with a focus on high-stakes election periods. Broadcasters found guilty of spreading misinformation or hate speech will face severe penalties, including fines and revocation of licenses.
