UNILAG Alumni Send Wake-Up Call to English Grads
The University of Lagos Department of English Alumni recently gathered for their maiden reunion, and it wasn’t just a nostalgic affair. The event became a platform for their members to share a crucial message: the traditional English graduate’s career path is no longer a dead-end street.
The alumni warned that with the rise of automation and AI, many entry-level jobs that English graduates were once guaranteed are disappearing fast. As a result, their advice to current and prospective students is clear: reinvent yourself. This means embracing lifelong learning and being prepared to adapt to an ever-changing job market.
Members of the alumni spoke about how the days of simply graduating with a degree and securing a stable teaching job or career in the civil service are numbered. English graduates need to think beyond traditional career paths and explore new opportunities in areas such as content creation, digital marketing, and technical writing.
Lifelong Learning is Key
Lagos-based author and UNILAG alum, **Bode Osanyinwela**, emphasized the importance of continuous learning during the reunion. He noted that the job market is no longer static and that professionals need to be willing to upskill and reskill to remain relevant. “We must be prepared to learn new things, acquire new skills, and be open to new experiences. This is the only way to stay ahead in this rapidly changing world,” he said.
The alumni also encouraged students to explore various fields and industries to identify their true passions and interests. By doing so, they can create careers that not only bring fulfillment but also provide a strong foundation for future success.
Adapting to the Future of Work
So, what does this mean for English graduates? It’s simple: stop relying on outdated career paths and focus on building a versatile set of skills that can be applied across multiple industries. This might mean taking online courses, attending workshops, or even pursuing a postgraduate degree in a related field. The options are endless, and the potential for success is significant.
By embracing lifelong learning and adaptability, English graduates can ensure that their degrees remain relevant and valuable in the years to come. As the job market continues to evolve, one thing is certain: the ability to adapt and learn will be key to success.
