AI-Powered Chatbots Scam Students out of Thousands in Nigeria
A 400-level Medicine and Surgery student at Abia State University, Godswill Ezennwa, recently received a suspicious ₦200,000 alert on his bank account, claiming to be a winnings notification from a prize draw. However, this turned out to be a scam orchestrated by an AI-powered chatbot.
The scam reportedly convinced the student to hand over thousands of naira in exchange for a large sum of money, which never materialized. The AI system behind the scam likely used natural language processing (NLP) to craft convincing messages and build trust with its victims.
Scams on the Rise with AI’s Help
This incident highlights the growing concern of AI-powered scams in Nigeria. As more businesses and individuals adopt AI, the technology is being misused for malicious purposes. Scammers are using AI chatbots to deceive people, exploiting their trust and emotions.
Why Scammers Prefer AI
The reason scammers prefer AI is its ability to mimic human-like conversations. AI chatbots can respond quickly and convincingly, creating a sense of urgency and trust with their victims. This is particularly effective in scenarios where people are desperate for financial help, such as students struggling with poverty.
Protecting Yourself from AI-Powered Scams
To avoid falling victim to AI-powered scams, it’s essential to be cautious when receiving unsolicited messages or calls. Be wary of requests for money or personal information, especially if they seem urgent or too good to be true. Verify the authenticity of any messages or calls by contacting the organization directly.
What this means: Don’t rely solely on AI-driven notifications or messages, especially when it comes to financial transactions. Always verify the authenticity of any request for money or personal information, and be cautious when dealing with unknown individuals or organizations.
