Severe flooding decimates Kaikoura dairy farm
Kaikoura dairy farmer Adam McManaway is still reeling from the devastating impact of severe flooding on his property, which left widespread damage and significant losses in its wake.
McManaway’s farm, in the picturesque coastal town of Kaikoura, was severely affected by the torrential rains that hit the region in January 2023. With floodwaters rising to near-record levels, McManaway estimates that over 100 hectares of pasture were lost, along with vital infrastructure such as fences and waterways.
Flood recovery efforts underway
The New Zealand government has pledged significant support to aid in the recovery efforts, with a package of funding and resources being made available to farmers affected by the flooding. Local farming communities, however, are warning that the scale of the damage may be greater than initially thought, with some farmers reporting losses in excess of NZD $1 million.
McManaway, who has been farming in the area for over 20 years, is still coming to terms with the extent of the damage. “It’s devastating, to be honest,” he says. “We’re talking about years of hard work and investment gone, not to mention the emotional toll it’s taken on the community.”
Support from the local community
Despite the significant challenges ahead, McManaway remains optimistic about the resilience of the local farming community. “The support from our fellow farmers and the wider community has been overwhelming,” he says. “It’s a testament to the strength and camaraderie of rural New Zealand.”
