Around 45% of workers in Ireland are now fretting about AI replacing them, according to a recent survey by recruitment agency FRS. But when it comes to putting those worries to the test, the numbers are surprisingly low.
Worried workers, cautious employers
The survey, which polled over 1,000 workers and hundreds of businesses, found that more than 4 in 10 respondents are worried about AI making their jobs obsolete. While the anxiety is palpable, the actual implementation of AI in the workplace is a different story.
Only about 5% of companies surveyed said they’ve used AI technology to fully replace human roles, while 25% reported having some form of AI-powered automation in place. The rest, it seems, are playing it safe – or simply not doing anything at all.
Fear vs. fact
So why the disconnect between worker anxiety and employer action? FRS Recruitment’s CEO, Adrian Goodinson, thinks it’s largely down to a lack of awareness about AI’s capabilities.
“Many businesses are still in the dark about how AI can be used to enhance their operations, rather than just replace jobs,” Goodinson said. “There’s a lot of misinformation out there, and we need to do a better job of educating people about the benefits of AI.”
What this means
For workers, it means that while AI might still be a looming threat, it’s not the immediate reality it’s made out to be. Employers, on the other hand, need to take heed of the warning signs and start exploring ways to harness AI’s potential – before it’s too late.
As for the broader implications, this survey serves as a wake-up call for businesses to get ahead of the curve and start investing in AI education and training. By doing so, they can not only mitigate the risks of AI but also unlock its full benefits and stay competitive in a rapidly changing market.
For those worried workers in Ireland, the message is clear: while AI might be a concern, it’s not a reason to panic just yet. But for employers, it’s time to take action and start preparing for the future – before AI becomes the future of their business.
