India’s top Institutes of Technology (IITs) are sounding the alarm: the country’s AI dreams are threatened by a lack of both specialized AI expertise and broad AI literacy.
Elite Engineers Not Enough
“Creating just AI engineers won’t be enough,” warns **Prof. V. Ramgopal Rao**, Director of IIT Delhi, highlighting the need for India to develop a diverse pool of AI talent. “We need professionals who can integrate AI into various sectors, from healthcare to finance.”
India’s AI ambitions are not new, but the IIT heads emphasize that the focus on producing elite AI engineers has left a gap in the broader application of AI in various industries. “There’s a significant gap between the availability of AI engineers and the actual deployment of AI solutions,” notes **Prof. Subhasis Chaudhuri**, Director of IIT Mumbai.
The Need for Broad Literacy
The IIT heads stress that AI literacy is not just a problem of the future; it’s already a pressing concern. “As AI becomes increasingly ubiquitous, every profession will need to adapt and understand the basics of AI,” explains **Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi**, Director of IIT Madras.
They advocate for introducing AI-related courses in schools and colleges, as well as vocational training programs that equip students with the skills to work with AI tools and technologies. “This will create a culture of AI awareness and literacy across the country,” says Prof. Ramgopal Rao.
A National Imperative
The IIT directors see AI literacy as a national imperative, essential for India’s economic and social development. “As AI becomes a key driver of innovation, we need to ensure that the benefits of AI are shared equitably,” warns Prof. Subhasis Chaudhuri.
What this means: India needs a two-pronged approach to AI development, where both specialized AI expertise and broad AI literacy are prioritized to unlock the country’s full potential. By developing a diverse pool of AI talent and fostering AI awareness across the nation, India can harness the power of AI to drive growth, innovation, and inclusive development.
