Gujarat is poised to become India’s next major defence manufacturing hub, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh revealed recently.
Singh, a strong advocate for boosting India’s indigenous defence production, pointed to the state’s industrial prowess and highly skilled workforce as key factors that could propel Gujarat into the forefront of defence manufacturing.
Gujarat’s Industrial Strength and Skilled Workforce
Singh’s comments come as India continues to expand its domestic defence production and exports, with the country’s defence exports more than doubling in value since 2020.
Gujarat, with its well-established industrial base and a large pool of skilled workers, is in a prime position to capitalize on this growth trend, Singh said. The state is already home to several major defence and aerospace companies, including Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL).
India’s Defence Production and Exports
India has been actively working to reduce its dependence on foreign defence imports, with a focus on promoting domestic production and exports. The country’s defence exports have been steadily increasing, with exports valued at over ₹$12 billion in the last fiscal year.
Defence Minister Singh has been a key proponent of this ‘Make in India’ initiative, which aims to boost indigenous defence production and reduce reliance on foreign imports. The initiative has led to significant investments in defence infrastructure, research, and development, positioning India as a major player in the global defence market.
What this means
The potential emergence of Gujarat as a major defence manufacturing hub has significant implications for the state’s economy and the broader defence sector. With its skilled workforce, robust industrial base, and government support, Gujarat could become a major driver of defence production and exports, contributing to India’s growth as a self-sufficient defence powerhouse.
