AI Hype Isn’t Reality Checks Show Up in Boardrooms
Gartner analysts are now warning IT leaders that the promised benefits of artificial intelligence won’t materialize unless they put governance, change management, and talent development at the top of their priorities lists.
The warning comes as companies continue to pour billions of dollars into AI initiatives, despite the ongoing hype and rising concerns about a potential AI bubble. IT leaders, in particular, are feeling the heat to deliver tangible business outcomes from these investments. But Gartner’s message is clear: hype and pressure aren’t substitutes for hard-won results.
According to Gartner research, a significant portion of AI initiatives are doomed to fail due to inadequate planning, poor leadership, and insufficient resources. “Many organizations are investing heavily in AI, but without a clear understanding of how to use it to create business value,” said Sylvia Glickman, Distinguished Vice President Analyst at Gartner. “We need to move beyond the hype and focus on building the foundations for successful AI adoption.”
Governance: The Unsung Hero of AI Success
Gartner analysts argue that governance is the unsung hero of successful AI adoption. Without a clear, well-defined governance structure in place, AI initiatives are unlikely to deliver the desired outcomes. This includes establishing clear policies, procedures, and accountability frameworks for AI development, implementation, and use.
“Governance is not just about compliance; it’s about setting the stage for successful AI adoption,” said Gartner’s William McKnight, Distinguished VP Analyst. “It’s about creating a culture that values transparency, accountability, and responsible AI use.”
Talent and Change Management Matter Too
Talent development and change management are other critical components of successful AI adoption, according to Gartner. Organizations need to invest in the skills and expertise required to design, develop, and deploy AI solutions. At the same time, they need to manage the organizational changes required to fully leverage the benefits of AI.
“Change management is not just about communicating the need for change; it’s about creating a compelling vision for the future and empowering employees to drive that change,” said Michael Woodbridge, Senior Director Analyst at Gartner. “It’s about building a culture of innovation and continuous learning.”
What This Means
In short, AI hype won’t deliver business outcomes. To succeed, IT leaders need to prioritize foundational investments in governance, change management, and talent development. By doing so, they can unlock the true potential of AI and drive real business value.
