Elon Musk’s SpaceX has just secured a massive contract with the US Air Force to provide Starlink internet services to remote military bases.
Double Standard
This news comes as a shock to many who remember the billionaire’s long-standing stance against military involvement. In 2020, Musk tweeted that he was ‘convinced that the best path forward for humanity is a multi-planetary one with a strong focus on space-based solar power.’ He has also repeatedly expressed his support for the idea of a ‘ Space X-led Mars colony’.
Yet, when it comes to securing contracts with the military, Musk’s tone takes a drastic shift. ‘I’m not a fan of war, I’m a fan of peace,’ he told a crowd of investors in 2019, while simultaneously acknowledging that ‘it’s hard to imagine a future where the military isn’t a significant customer for us.’
Government Contracts and Business Ambition
This isn’t the first time Musk’s companies have found themselves at the receiving end of military contracts. Tesla, for instance, has been working with the Pentagon since 2016 to develop electric vehicles for the military, and Neuralink, his neurotechnology company, has also landed a contract with the DOD.
The question on everyone’s mind is: how does Musk justify his company’s involvement with the military while maintaining a façade of being a libertarian and advocating for peace? Is it simply a matter of pragmatism, or has his stance on war evolved over time?
A Business Priority
What this means is that Musk’s business interests have clearly taken precedence over his ideological views. As his companies continue to grow and expand into new markets, it seems his commitment to peace and space exploration may be nothing more than a marketing gimmick.
The future of space exploration, and whether it will be driven by profit or a genuine desire for humanity’s betterment, remains to be seen. One thing is certain, however: Elon Musk’s self-contradictory military policy has just got a lot more complicated.
