Mental health support must be human-centered

A growing number of pre-law students are turning to AI tools for mental health support, a trend that raises concerns about the human-centered nature of this support.

AI’s Siren Song for Students

The pervasive and even addictive nature of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools allows anyone to turn to them for mental health support easily, but pre-law students are especially susceptible. According to a survey by Juris Education, nearly 40% of these students are using AI tools to cope with stress, anxiety, and other mental health issues, even if involuntarily.

One of the main reasons for this trend is the accessibility and convenience of AI tools. Students can access them on their phones, laptops, or other devices, making it easy to check in and get support whenever, wherever.

AI: A Double-Edged Sword

However, this convenience comes with a catch. While AI tools can provide a temporary fix for mental health issues, they often lack the nuance, empathy, and human connection that human therapists and counselors offer. The survey found that 60% of students felt that AI support was “somewhat” or “very” impersonal, leading to feelings of isolation and disconnection.

This is a problem because mental health support needs to be human-centered, not AI-driven. Humans are complex, emotional, and deeply interconnected beings, and we need support that acknowledges this complexity. AI tools, on the other hand, are programmed to provide quick fixes and solutions, often at the expense of deeper understanding and connection.

What This Means

What this means is that students, and all of us, need to be mindful of our reliance on AI tools for mental health support. While they can be helpful, they should not replace human connection and support. We need to prioritize human-centered mental health support, recognizing that true healing and growth require empathy, understanding, and connection with others.
