UK and EU Sanctions on Israeli Settlers Spark Fears of Increased Violence
The UK and other countries have imposed sanctions on Israeli settlers, a move Yisrael Ganz, Governor of the Binyamin Regional Council and Chairman of the Yesha Council, claims will “promote terrorism and not peace.” This decision will restrict business and financial activities with the Binyamin Regional Council, which spans 4.2 km² in the West Bank.
The sanctions are aimed at entities operating beyond the Green Line, including those in the settlements. Yisrael Ganz believes the sanctions will create a rift in the Israeli government, as the decision to impose them was made in cooperation with the Palestinian Authority (PA). “The response to sanctions must be the dismantling of the PA,” Ganz said in response to the new sanctions imposed by the UK and other countries on “settler” entities and the PA.
The UK’s decision to impose sanctions on Israeli settlers is part of an ongoing effort to promote a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. However, critics argue that this approach will ultimately harm both parties, as it fails to address the root causes of the conflict. They claim that the sanctions will only serve to further entrench extremist views and increase violence.
What this means: For many Israelis, the sanctions represent a shift in international opinion, which may lead to increased tensions between Israel and its allies. Ganz’s call for dismantling the PA suggests that some Israelis believe the current peace process is flawed and that drastic action is needed to move forward.
