The sci-fi movie Annihilation was set to be a franchise starter back in 2018, but two years after its release, fans are still waiting for the long-rumored sequel. Director Alex Garland’s adaptation of Jeff VanderMeer’s novel of the same name was a critically acclaimed, visually stunning take on the original story.
Different Kind of Sci-Fi
The film’s success wasn’t limited to its artistic achievements, as it performed reasonably well at the box office, earning over $43 million globally. However, despite this, the planned sequel never materialized. This is a stark contrast to other sci-fi franchises that have dominated the past decade-plus of Hollywood.
Blockbuster franchises like Jurassic World, Star Wars, and The Hunger Games have all been rejuvenated or started anew over the years. These series often have a clear direction and a well-established IP to build upon, but it seems that Annihilation’s unique blend of sci-fi and mystery isn’t as marketable as it could be.
What Went Wrong?
The lack of a sequel can be attributed to a combination of factors. Paramount Pictures, the distributor behind the film, was involved in a major merger with Viacom in 2019. This shake-up may have led to a shift in priorities, causing the studio to drop plans for a sequel.
Additionally, Alex Garland’s post-Annihilation projects, including the sci-fi novel The Hunger and the psychological horror film Menashe, indicate a focus on standalone, character-driven stories. It’s possible that the director’s vision for the franchise didn’t align with the studio’s expectations, resulting in a creative impasse.
What this means for fans of the original is a renewed wait for a potential sequel or spin-off. While there’s currently no concrete news on the film’s future, the sci-fi universe remains full of possibilities. Only time will tell if Annihilation will get a second chance to captivate audiences worldwide.
