A new Excise Policy in Ladakh has just lifted the lid on hard liquor sales, marking a significant shift in the region’s liquor sales landscape.
A Change of Heart on Liquor Sales
The policy, approved by Lieutenant Governor **Vinai Kumar Saxena** on Sunday, marks a major departure from the previous restrictive approach. Until now, Ladakh had limited liquor sales to government-owned shops, which were few and far between. This move is aimed at curbing illicit alcohol sales and narcotics by providing easier access to legal beverages.
The Excise Policy also introduces some welcome bureaucracy-busting measures, streamlining the process of obtaining a license from 16 to six documents. This reduction is expected to ease the burden on potential license holders and reduce the opportunity for corruption.
More Liquor, More Places
Perhaps most significantly, the new policy expands liquor availability to four additional districts. This expansion will bring more choice to consumers, particularly in the rural areas where liquor sales were previously scarce. The policy also allows for the sale of hard liquor through retail vends, adding to the convenience of consumers.
What this means: **More liquor stores, more selection**. The relaxation of liquor sale regulations in Ladakh will likely lead to an increase in the number of liquor stores popping up in the region, making it easier for residents to access their preferred beverages. The move is also expected to help curb the illicit liquor trade, which has long plagued the region.
