Greensboro’s Downtown Greenway: A 4.5-Mile Bike and Pedestrian Haven Takes Shape
Dabney Sanders, the project manager behind Greensboro’s Downtown Greenway, is celebrating a major milestone: the opening of the project’s final section. This brings the total length of the greenway to 4.5 miles, weaving its way through one of North Carolina’s fastest-growing cities.
Host Jeff Wood sat down with Sanders on the Talking Headways podcast to discuss the development of the greenway. The project, which began in 2010, has been years in the making. Sanders shared the challenges they faced, including navigating complex logistics and ensuring community buy-in. “It’s been a really collaborative effort,” she said.
The Downtown Greenway is more than just a bike path – it’s a vibrant public space that connects residents to their city. The greenway’s design incorporates public art, seating areas, and landscaping to create a welcoming atmosphere. By prioritizing pedestrians and cyclists, the city aims to reduce traffic congestion and promote a healthier, more sustainable lifestyle.
What This Means for Greensboro Residents
For locals, the Downtown Greenway offers a safe and accessible way to get around, while also providing a unique recreational experience. According to Sanders, the greenway has seen a significant increase in users since its opening. “We’re seeing a lot of families and kids on bikes, which is really wonderful,” she said.
The greenway’s impact extends beyond the immediate community. By investing in pedestrian infrastructure, Greensboro is sending a message that cyclists and walkers are valued members of the city’s transportation system. This shift in priorities has the potential to inspire other cities to follow suit.
A Model for Future Development
Sanders acknowledged the importance of community engagement in the greenway’s success. “We worked closely with local businesses and residents to ensure that the greenway was something that everyone could use and enjoy.” This collaborative approach has yielded a project that is truly of the people, by the people.
As cities continue to grapple with the challenges of urbanization, the Downtown Greenway serves as a model for inclusive and sustainable development. By prioritizing public space and community engagement, cities can create vibrant, connected neighborhoods that benefit everyone – not just drivers.
