Artificial intelligence, or AI, has been touted as a threat to accountants’ jobs, but the industry group argues that this narrative is overstated. “There’s an assumption that AI will do all of the work and accountants won’t need to worry about things anymore,” said **John Gleeson**, CEO of Chartered Accountants Ireland. “That’s not the case at all.”
AI: A Tool, Not a Replacement

Instead of replacing accountants, AI will complement their work, freeing them up to focus on higher-level tasks, like strategy and advisory work. “Accountants have a unique set of skills that are hard to replicate with AI,” said **Gleeson**. “AI can crunch numbers, but accountants provide context and interpretation.”
Accountants will still be needed to review AI-generated reports, ensure they’re accurate, and provide insight into complex financial data. This will require a deep understanding of the data, as well as the ability to interpret it in a way that’s meaningful to businesses and individuals.
Accountants Must Lead the Way
Chartered Accountants Ireland believes that accountants have a crucial role to play in ensuring that AI is deployed responsibly and that its outputs can be trusted. “We must take a leading role in ensuring that AI is deployed in a way that benefits society and the economy,” said **Gleeson**.
