A team of designers from the University of Illinois Chicago has developed a series of interactive objects designed to help people with time management, specifically targeting those with neurodivergent conditions. These ‘pebbles’ are an unusual approach to what is typically a mundane task.
A Pebble for Time Management
The time management pebbles are small, tactile objects that use AI to help users keep track of time. They’re designed to be placed in different locations around the user’s environment, where they’ll emit subtle vibrations and sounds to remind the user of upcoming events or appointments. This gentle nudging system is meant to be less overwhelming than traditional alarm clocks or notifications.
VR Glove Controller
Another project showcased by the University of Illinois Chicago is a virtual reality (VR) glove controller. This innovative device is designed to mimic the natural movement of the hand in VR, providing a more immersive experience. Unlike traditional VR controllers, the glove controller uses sensors to track the user’s hand movements in real-time, allowing for more precise control.
Furniture Design
The design students also explored furniture design with a focus on creating adaptable spaces. Their project involved designing a furniture system that can change shape and configuration to accommodate different users and activities. This ‘smart furniture’ concept has the potential to revolutionize how we think about interior design and the ways in which spaces can be used.
These projects demonstrate the creative and practical applications of AI and design in everyday life. By developing innovative solutions to real-world problems, designers and engineers are pushing the boundaries of what is possible.
What this means is that people with neurodivergent conditions may find it easier to manage their time without feeling overwhelmed, thanks to the subtle reminders provided by the interactive pebbles. Meanwhile, the VR glove controller has the potential to make VR experiences more accessible and enjoyable for a wider range of people.
