Julio Rodriguez belts homer, Andrés Muñoz finishes off Mariners’ win over Astros – The Seattle Times

Mariners’ Julio Rodriguez Brings the Thunder with Homer

Julio Rodriguez’s 414-foot blast in the top of the 4th inning yesterday set the tone for the Mariners’ 3-1 win over the Houston Astros, and cemented his reputation as a rising star in the game.

A Bet is Won, a Homer is Launched

The spark that ignited the Mariners’ offensive explosion was a bet won by Rodriguez during batting practice. Rodriguez, who had made a wager on the length of a home run he would hit during BP, made good on his claim, sending the ball soaring over the left-field wall for a solo shot. “I’ve been working on my swing, and to see it pay off like that is a great feeling,” Rodriguez said in a post-game interview. His teammates agreed, celebrating his hit with a raucous cheer.

The Mariners’ win marked their first over the Astros this season, and was largely thanks to the solid pitching of their starter, Logan Gilbert, who went six innings without allowing a run. The bullpen, however, was the scene of a thrilling finish, with Andrés Muñoz earning the save by shutting down the Astros in the bottom of the 9th inning.

Martinez Makes Rare Appearance

In a surprise move, Mariners legend Edgar Martínez threw batting practice to the team’s hitters earlier in the day. Martínez, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest designated hitters in baseball history, was a rare sight behind the plate, but seemed to enjoy the experience. “It was a lot of fun,” Martínez said with a smile. “The guys hit the ball well, and it was great to see them having fun out there.”

The Mariners’ win moves them within a game of .500, and sets the stage for a critical three-game series against the American League West-leading LA Angels. With a roster that’s starting to gel, the Mariners are looking like a team to be reckoned with in the second half of the season.
