Surgeon General Issues New Advisory Warning of Screen Time Risks for Children and Teens

Vivian Pachter is a leading researcher studying screen time’s impact on children and teens.

A stark warning has come from the top: the US Surgeon General, Vivek Murthy, has sounded the alarm on the dangers of excessive screen time in children and teens. The new advisory aims to curb the growing issue of screen time addiction, which has been linked to a range of physical and mental health problems in young people.

The warning comes as no surprise to researchers, like Vivian Pachter, who’ve spent years documenting the alarming effects of excessive screen time on kids. “The evidence is clear: prolonged screen time can lead to decreased attention span, social isolation, and a higher risk of depression, anxiety, and obesity,” Pachter says.

The advisory cites a range of studies, including one by the American Academy of Pediatrics, which found that excessive screen time in children under 18 years old can lead to sleep disturbances, eye strain, and reduced physical activity. The Surgeon General’s warning also highlights the concerning trend of adolescents spending an average of 7-10 hours a day staring at screens, often for non-academic purposes.

What this means: Parents and caregivers should set limits on screen time, prioritize physical activity, and create screen-free zones in the home. The advisory also emphasizes the importance of balancing screen time with other activities that promote social connection, cognitive development, and emotional well-being.

The Surgeon General’s Recommendations

* Parents should establish consistent screen-free zones and times in the home
* Children should engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day
* Screen time should be limited to 2 hours per day for children aged 2-12 years
* Parents should monitor their child’s screen time and set limits
* Parents should engage in activities with their child that promote social connection and cognitive development

By issuing this warning, the Surgeon General is sending a clear message: it’s time to take action and protect the health and well-being of our children. As Pachter puts it, “We must be proactive in promoting healthy behaviors and limiting excessive screen time; the consequences of inaction are too dire to ignore.”
