CEO Spotlight: “Our Regulators Have Lost the Plot” — Why Canadian Entrepreneurs Are Sounding the Alarm Over Digital Regulation

Canadian entrepreneur Yanik Guillemette isn’t mincing words about the country’s digital regulations: they’re out of control.

Guillemette’s Frustration

Guillemette, whose startup is working on innovative AI-powered tools, spoke to us about the challenges he and his peers face with the rapidly expanding regulatory landscape. “Our regulators have lost the plot,” he said, emphasizing the need for a more balanced approach to overseeing the tech industry.

The CRTC’s (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission) recent proposal to require online streaming platforms to contribute 15% of their annual revenue to the Canadian media landscape has been a major point of contention. Guillemette worries that this move will lead to higher costs and reduced innovation, ultimately hurting the very people these regulations aim to help.

Regulatory Overreach?

Guillemette and other entrepreneurs in Canada argue that the government’s push for regulations is stifling innovation, rather than fostering it. “We need regulations to be smart and nuanced,” he said. “Right now, they’re just creating uncertainty and deterring investment in the sector.”

Gillemette points to the EU’s Digital Markets Act as a model for well-crafted regulations. This legislation requires tech giants to be transparent about their algorithms and ensures that users aren’t being exploited for data. However, Guillemette remains skeptical about the effectiveness of similar regulations in Canada, citing a lack of engagement with industry experts.

A Call to Action

What this means for Canadian entrepreneurs is a challenging environment in which to start or grow a business. Guillemette urges policymakers to listen to industry experts and work collaboratively to craft regulations that support innovation, rather than hindering it.

“We’re not anti-regulation, we’re pro-innovation,” Guillemette emphasized. “We need our regulators to understand that and work with us to create a digital landscape that benefits everyone.”
