I went hands-on with Lenovo’s concept handheld — and it’s both awesome and weird

Hands-On with Lenovo’s Concept Handheld: A Unique Blend of Awesomeness and Weirdness

Lenovo has been making waves in the handheld gaming market with devices like the Legion Go 2 and Legion Go S. However, the company has now unveiled a truly innovative concept that’s sure to turn heads: the Lenovo Legion Go Fold Concept. As a seasoned tech journalist, I had the chance to go hands-on with this unique device at a pre-MWC event, and I must say, it’s both impressive and quirky.

Design and Build

The Legion Go Fold Concept features a POLED panel that expands from 7.7 inches when folded to a full 11.6 inches when unfolded. The device feels relatively light, but it can get a bit wobbly when fully unfolded. The detachable controllers are a great addition, and the device supports up to four distinct usage modes, making it a versatile gaming handheld. The design is a notable departure from other portable gaming handhelds, but it still delivers on the core features gamers expect.

Controllers and Features

The controllers are similar to the TrueStrike controllers on the Legion Go, with a familiar button layout and shoulder triggers with stops. The right controller also features a small built-in touchscreen that doubles as a touchpad, displays performance metrics and settings, and can be assigned as a customizable hotkey. The expandable display enables four distinct modes: Standard Handheld Mode, Vertical Split-Screen Mode, Horizon Full-Screen Mode, and Expanded Desktop Mode.

Specifications and Performance

The Legion Go Fold Concept is powered by an Intel Core Ultra 7 258V (Lunar Lake) processor, combined with 32GB of RAM and a 48Wh battery. While final specifications aren’t locked in, this hardware should deliver solid gaming and productivity performance. Although I wasn’t able to play games during my hands-on, I expect the device to perform at least on par with the MSI Claw 8 AI+.

Outlook and Conclusion

The Lenovo Legion Go Fold Concept is a breath of fresh air in a market dominated by similar gaming handhelds. With its unique design, versatile modes, and strong specs, it could expand what a handheld can be. While it’s impossible to say whether this concept will ever make it to market, I hope it does, if only to inspire other manufacturers to get more inventive. The possibilities are exciting, and I’m eager to see how this concept evolves in the future.
