A S$50 million fund was announced at the start of the ATxSummit 2026, a five-day conference in Singapore, to support AI projects that tackle real-world problems. The fund, launched by the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), aims to harness the power of AI for the public good.
The ATxSummit 2026, which began on May 19, is a collaborative effort between Singapore and the neighboring Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries to leverage AI for regional growth and improvement in people’s lives.
Fresh Collaboration
IMDA’s Deputy Chief Executive, Tan Kiat How, highlighted the need for AI to be beneficial to everyone, not just the privileged few. “AI has the potential to improve lives, but it needs to be done with a sense of shared ambition and purpose,” he emphasized. Collaboration with ASEAN countries will ensure that AI is harnessed to address pressing regional challenges such as healthcare, education, and climate change.
ASEAN’s AI Vision</hassistant
ASEAN’s AI vision involves leveraging AI to drive economic growth, improve healthcare, and enhance education. The collective efforts of the region’s economies aim to ensure AI benefits society as a whole.
ASEAN countries will be working together to develop standards and regulations for AI, as well as ensuring that it aligns with the region’s social and cultural values. This is expected to pave the way for increased investment in AI and its applications, creating new job opportunities and driving regional economic growth.
Regional Cooperation
Regional cooperation in AI is not new to Singapore, which has been actively promoting AI development and adoption in the region for several years. Singapore’s own AI strategy focuses on five areas: AI in industries, AI in people, AI in data, AI in cities, and AI in governance.
The country has also launched several initiatives, such as the AI Singapore (AISG) initiative, which aims to develop AI talent and capabilities in the country. AISG has already seen significant success, with several AI startups and companies emerging from the program.
As the region continues to move forward, the ATxSummit 2026 serves as a catalyst for further collaboration and innovation in AI. With the S$50 million fund in place, it’s likely that we’ll see more AI applications that benefit society in the coming years.
Ultimately, the goal is to ensure that AI is used for good, and not just to drive profit. As AI continues to shape our world, it’s refreshing to see regional cooperation and ambition to harness its power for the public good.
